タヒチの島々とLGBTQI⁺の方々の歴史

19世紀初頭、タヒチの島々にやってきた西洋人は、第3の性として生活する人々に出会いました。この人々は「中間」を意味する「マフ」と呼ばれ、男女両方の特徴を兼ね備えた存在として地域社会に受け入れられ、尊重されてきました。この「マフ」というアイデンティティは、トランスジェンダーとはまた別のものとして捉えられ、現在も自然に受け入れられています。さらに、「ラエラエ」と呼ばれるアイデンティティも存在しています。ラエラエは、西洋のジェンダーの概念とは異なるものの、トランスジェンダー女性に近いアイデンティティで、女の子のいない家庭で、女性として育てられた男の子のことです。現在でもタヒチでは、大人に成長する過程で、自分がマフやラエラエとして生きることを自由に選択できる、個人の意思を尊重する慣習が残っています。このような文化的な背景から、タヒチの島々においてLGBTQI+の方々はあたたかく歓迎されています。

タヒチ観光局はIGLTAに加盟

2024年1月より、タヒチ観光局は、IGLTA（the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association）に加盟しました。1983年に設立されたIGLTAは、LGBTQ+フレンドリーな観光団体の世界有数のネットワークです。同協会は、世界中のLGBTQ+ツーリズムの平等と安全の促進に継続的に取り組みながら、無料の旅行情報を提供しています。タヒチ観光局では、LGBTQI+フレンドリーな旅行先として、さらなる活動を行ってまいります。

History of The Islands of Tahiti and LGBTQI⁺

In the early 19th century, Westerners who came to The Islands of Tahiti discovered people living as a third gender who share masculine and feminine attributes on the islands. These people were called “māhū” meaning ‘in the middle’, and are accepted by the local community and respected as human beings with a special place in Tahitian culture. This māhū identity is distinct from transgender identities and is accepted in Tahitian communities to this day.

The culture of Tahiti is very welcoming and inclusive, stemming from the presence of another gender class, known as “raerae” people. While raerae identities are distinct from western identities they are most closely related to trans-feminine people but have separate distinctions. Where they differ is in the traditional upbringing of Tahitian children. Raerae people are essentially male children raised as females in a family that lacked a female presence. Today in Tahitian culture there is respect for the wishes of the individual who is free to live as a māhū or raerae once they reach the age of maturity.

Weddings and Honeymoon in The Islands of Tahiti

Same-sex marriage was recognized in France in May 2013. It is of course also recognized in The Islands of Tahiti, which is part of France. The new laws have been enacted in France Territorial Polynesia to support wedding preparations, making it easier for foreign nationals to get married in the place of their dreams. Tahiti Tourisme website provides information on its certified “Tahiti Specialists”. Some of these specialists specialize in working with LGBTQI⁺ individuals, and we encourage you to contact them for more information when you travel to The Islands of Tahiti.

Tahiti Tourisme has joined IGLTA.

Since January 2024, Tahiti Tourisme has joined the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA). Founded in 1983, the IGLTA is the world’s leading network of LGBTQ+ friendly tourism organizations. The organization provides free travel resources and information, while continually working to promote equality and safety in LGBTQI+ tourism worldwide. Throughout the year, various initiatives are planned to engage and inform this audience about our destination.

About Tahiti Tourisme

Tahiti Tourisme is the Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) for The Islands of Tahiti, overseeing all marketing and advertising actions, public relations, promotions, events and travel agent training programs globally. With a primary mission to bring visitors to The Islands of Tahiti, this Economic Interest Group is comprised of a Tahiti-based head office and 12 international offices promoting the destination across 15 international markets. Tahiti Tourisme also runs the visitors’ welcome and information desks and works with the Tourism Committees across the islands. It is also involved in raising awareness on the importance of tourism among the local population and organizes local events to promote domestic tourism.
